Diabetic Pets

December 14th, 2009 (02:12PM)

Just as in human food, pet food with a low glycemic index level can help long-term health by reducing risk of diseases including heart disease and diabetes.  Foods with a low glycemic level are key to managing weight loss.  Glycemic levels in food are determined by their effect on blood sugar.  The lower the effect a food has on blood sugar level spike the better.

When reading a pet food ingredient panel look for whole foods with low glycemic levels.  This is especially important for diabetic or obese dogs and cats. The low carbohydrate pet food brand Evo is mentioned in an American Kennel Club article on diabetes.  Evo's new weight management dog food contains only 11% carbohydrates.

High GI foods have a glycemic index of more than 70. Low GI foods have a glycemic index of less than 55. Medium GI foods are in between. There are multiple websites with glycemic levels of everyday foods.
